Benefits of Electrical Muscle Stimulation

The goal of chiropractic treatment is to increase movement in the joint and relax the muscles. At Health 1st Chiropractic and Rehabilitation, our doctors achieve this while using heat, ultrasound, and electrical muscle stimulation to help relax your muscles before doing spinal manipulation. During electrical muscle stimulation, electrodes are placed on the skin that sends light electrical pulses to different areas of the body with the purpose of reducing inflammation, curtailing muscle spasms and relieving back pain.

Electrical muscle stimulation is an exceptional way to help the body in the healing process. This therapy utilizes a very small electrical current in an effort to help reduce swelling and release trigger points that may have the muscle locked up. The feeling of this therapy is very gentle and most patients feel extremely comfortable during the treatment. In addition, this method of treatment stimulates the body’s natural healing method by helping it to produce natural pain killing endorphins.

If you are interested in electrical muscle stimulation therapy, give us a call today. Cryotherapy: Icing an Injury

An injury benefits from ice days following the trauma. However, if your pain worsens, you should visit our staff at Health 1st Chiropractic and Rehabilitation immediately. The icing method – cryotherapy – is an essential management skill that is also a cheap, effective, and drugless method for relieving the pain of injuries. Safe application of ice to your skin can relieve symptoms from sprains, strains, bruises, and virtually any situation in which superficial tissues are inflamed by trauma.

Cryotherapy is an excellent way to heal muscle spasms in the body. Icing is well known to help numb painful areas as well as provide a cooling relief to affected soft tissues. Applying cold compresses to the skin effectively reduces the temperature of the skin and constricts blood vessels in the area to promote healing. It can be done right at home, or we can offer the service to you right here in the office.

If you’ve recently suffered an injury, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To schedule an appointment in any of our Triad locations including our Greensboro, NC office, call us at 336-543-2231 or visit the Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation website, www.hstriad.com

Difference Between Sprains and Fractures

You can distinguish the difference between a sprain and a fracture depending on the physical pain that you feel. A sprain refers to stretched or torn tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels around a joint and can be caused by an accident, fall, or blow. A fracture, on the other hand, is a break or crack in a bone that can be caused by the same types of injuries, but instead, you might hear a snapping sound as a bone breaking. Here at Health 1st Chiropractic and Rehabilitation, no matter what type of injury you have, our staff is here to treat it.

Sprains are defined by the kind of tissue –bone, ligament, or tendon – that’s damaged. Meanwhile, a fracture describes a break in one or more of the bones. Injuries are the most common causes of foot and ankle sprains and fractures. Many fractures and sprains occur during sports, which is why warming up prior to physical activity can prevent ankle sprains and fractures and so can wearing proper shoes.

Get More Out of Your Run

At Health 1st Chiropractic and Rehabilitation, our staff supplies numerous treatment methods to help get your joints and spine in line. When joints are misaligned, they cannot flow through the full range of motion. Therefore, if you’re a runner, chiropractic care can help improve your coordination, increase your balance, amplify your precision and may even give you a better reaction time.

Gone are the days when chiropractic care was needed just for aches and pains. Nowadays, for runners, chiropractic care can be used for injury prevention because it emphasizes proper alignment of the spine and pelvis. If the pelvis is misaligned, it can not only cause wear and tear your joints, but it can put a strain on one particular body part. Runners can specifically benefit from chiropractic adjustments that will improve your overall performance over time.

If you are a runner and think you may benefit from chiropractic treatment, please give us a call. To schedule an appointment in any of our Triad locations including our Greensboro, NC office, call us at 336-543-2231 or visit the Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation website, www.hstriad.com

Self-Care for Back and Neck Pain

Almost everybody who experiences tight shoulders and neck accompanied with tension headaches knows how unpleasant the pain can be. Here at Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation, we offer a variety of treatments to treat your back and neck pain. However, when you can’t make it to the office, here are some self-care tips to keep your discomfort under control.

  1. Take it easy – contrary to popular belief, studies on acute back pain actually show that a few days of restricting your activity, and taking the appropriate over-the-counter medication, is all that many people need to allow the strained muscles to relax and unwind.

  2. Ice, then heat – Ice and heat can alleviate local pain that comes from muscle and ligament strain. Ice slows swelling and inflammation and using heat afterward increases blood flow to the deep tissues and relaxes muscle spasms.

  3. Massage -- if you have a willing companion, gentle massage may provide some relief by stretching tight muscles and ligaments.

If you are suffering from back and neck pain, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To schedule an appointment in any of our Triad locations including our Greensboro, NC office, call us at 336-543-2231 or visit the Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation website, www.hstriad.com

Principles of Ergonomics

Believe it or not, ergonomics can make your job easier and keep your workforce safer. Simple things like sitting up straight while typing or lifting heavy objects with your legs instead of your back can save you a great deal of pain. Here at Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation, we can treat you if you’ve been injured on the job. However, we’d rather you follow these ergonomic principles to reduce the risk factors that lead to discomfort.

  • All work activities should permit the worker to adopt several different, but equally healthy and safe postures.

  • Where muscular force has to be exerted it should be done by the largest appropriate muscle groups available.

  • Work activities should be performed with the joints at about mid-point of their range of movement. This applies particularly to the head, trunk, and upper limbs.

If you have questions about ergonomics, please give us a call. To schedule an appointment in any of our Triad locations including our Greensboro, NC office, call us at 336-543-2231 or visit the Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation website, www.hstriad.com

Taking Synthroid? 5 Facts You Need To Know About Synthroid

Synthroid is the number 1 prescribed medication for people suffering with hypothyroidism.  After years of working with patients taking synthroid, here is a quick list of 5 facts you should know before you begin taking synthroid.

1.    Synthroid is a synthetic version of our own inactive thyroid hormone T4 or Synthetic Thyroxine.  This thyroid hormone is transported throughout the body and is converted to T3 which is the active thyroid hormone.  The first issue with this medication is that it is synthetic.  Whenever you add a chemical to the body, there are multiple processes the body must go through to utilize the medication - even though it “technically” is the same chemical make-up as the hormone our body produces.  The processes that the body must go through to utilize the synthetic thyroxine can initiate multiple reactions in the body, each of which can cause various signs and symptoms that a person taking synthroid should be on the lookout for.  For a list of reactions – read the label that comes with the medication.

2.    Synthroid is converted via the bodies metabolic processes into the active form of thyroid hormone better known as T3.  If you were unaware, T3 or triiodothyronine  is necessary for the cells of your body to initiate cellular activity.  In fact, thyroid hormones are the primary regulators of how much cell activity occurs in the body.  Although this explanation is an over-simplification of what truly occurs,  it does show how important the thyroid hormones are to our overall body functions.  This conversion of the synthetic medicine to the active hormone does not always occur as expected.  If there are issues with other body systems, the conversion process is unable to occur – making the medication not function as it was intended.    Let’s explain this more.

3.    If your body is unable to convert T4 to T3, many other body processes start to break down.  Since we know how important these hormones are to normal body function, and we are taking synthetic T4 (or the equivalent), our thyroid can become out of balance with the rest of the body and other processes begin to compensate.  This compensation can occur in the liver, the gut, or even in the brain, causing many of the other symptoms that people experience when their thyroid is not working properly.

4.    Synthroid has been shown to be effective for people with Primary Hypothyroidism.  Unbeknownst to most people, there are actually 6 different forms of thyroid dysfunction.  The difficulty is that of the 6 different types of thyroid dysfunctions, synthroid is only effective with one type of this disorder.  So millions of people who are taking medication for thyroid issues, may not be benefiting from the medication and in some cases may be making their thyroid issues worse.  It is important to understand which type of hypothyroidism you are experiencing and then understand what treatment protocols are appropriate for your particular case.

5.    If you are taking synthroid, make sure you have been properly diagnosed.  Since most doctors only test for TSH and T4 levels, many people have been incorrectly diagnosed with having primary hypothyroidism, when in fact, they have another type of hypothyroidism.  If you have been to your doctor, and have not had a comprehensive panel run for your thyroid dysfunction, you may be missing a piece of the puzzle that could help you truly understand what is going on with your thyroid.  We have found there are 9 specific thyroid tests that help determine the underlying nature of your thyroid issues.  If you haven’t had these 9 tests, you may be mis-diagnosed.

This is a quick list of what we teach our patients at our Thyroid Workshops, and our doctors have become educated in determining which lab tests should be run to give the best picture of a person’s thyroid function.  If you are suffering with thyroid issues and are searching for answers, now is the time to get your questions addressed.  Call any of our Triad offices, to schedule a time to speak with our doctors about your thyroid issues.

Proper Sleeping Posture

While you probably know that posture is important while sitting and standing, did you know that it is just as important while you are sleeping? Sleeping is meant to let your body rest and recharge. With an out-of-line spine, there are disrupted messages to and from your body and brain. At Health First Chiropractic and Rehab in Greensboro, NC, we want all of our patients to know proper sleep posture.

The first thing to know about sleep posture is that there are two preferred positions to sleep in and one that is not recommended. Sleeping on your back or your side is best. Sleeping on your stomach is not recommended because of the pressure it puts on your neck and lower back. However, we will give you tips for each position to help you rest comfortably and effectively.

Back and Side Sleepers

For those who sleep on their back or their side, thicker pillows are best for supporting your head and neck. When your head is hanging too low, a kink in the neck develops and disturbs the nerves. Make sure the pillow allows your head to rest at a level that keeps your cervical spine in line with the rest of your spine. Thicker pillows are usually best for these positions. In addition, side sleepers may want to place a pillow between their knees and back sleepers may want to place a pillow under their knees for extra back support.

Stomach Sleepers

For people who cannot sleep unless they are on their stomach, this is for you. Choose a very thin pillow or even use no pillow at all. This is so that your neck is not bent upwards while you are sleeping. Also, to take pressure off the rest of the spine, place a pillow under your pelvis/ stomach area.

Posture is important even when you’re sleeping! To set up an appointment at Health First Chiropractic in Greensboro, NC, call our office at (336) 543-2231 or visit our website, www.hstriad.com to learn about our other locations.

Allergies and Chiropractic Treatment

Summer has arrived, but if you suffer from allergies you may not be all that thrilled. Even though chiropractic care is not a specific allergy treatment, our doctors at Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation would like to explain why patients may find allergy relief from chiropractic care. The goal of chiropractic treatment focuses on optimizing the overall health function of the nervous system in your body. When the body becomes optimized, the body begins to function as it should. Because of this, your immune system develops a “boost” and decreases allergy symptoms.

Chiropractic adjustments release the pressure on the nervous system allowing the immune system to work more effectively. Since the beneficial effects of this treatment are very well documented, it’s no surprise that many chiropractic patients report of a reduction of allergy symptoms. Receiving regular adjustments realigns the spine and allows the body to heal itself and function at its highest performance. If you suffer from allergies, you may want to consider chiropractic as a treatment option.

If you suffer from allergies and think you may benefit from chiropractic treatment, please give us a call. To schedule an appointment in any of our Triad locations including our Greensboro, NC office, call us at 336-543-2231 or visit the Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation website, www.hstriad.com

  • Nerve problem: when the nerve root in the low back is pinched or compressed, causing a radiculopathy (sciatica). Typical causes of nerve root pinching include a lumbar herniated disc, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis

  • Non-specific: mechanical back pain in the lumbar spine. This type of lower back pain is the most common presentation and includes pain for which there is no identifiable cause.

Headaches and Chiropractic Care

Headaches can be very disruptive, especially if they are reoccurring. Here at Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation of Greensboro, NC, we treat patients who are suffering from frequent headaches. You do not have to live with the pain.

Headaches can be a result of many different conditions, which is why it should be treated with a whole-body approach. The chiropractic care approach is based on the body functioning as a whole and not separate sectors. Our body systems all work in sync with one another and are all connected through our spine.

Chiropractic care for headaches may involve spinal adjustments. These will make sure that the spine is in perfect alignment so it can function at its peak level. When there is a misalignment in the spine, commonly called a subluxation, there is pressure on the nerves which disrupt messages to and from the brain. Posture is a very important part of keeping an inline spine. We also will be sure that your lifestyle promotes health.

If you are constantly on the sidelines because of a headache, we may be able to help you. To schedule an appointment with us or to learn more, contact Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation of Greensboro, NC. What is a Subluxation?

The term “subluxation” is used by doctors of chiropractic to depict the altered position of the vertebrae and subsequent functional loss, which determines the location for the spinal manipulation. Subluxations can be caused by a wide range of issues ranging from a minor slip to something as serious as a car accident or sudden trauma. At Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation, we believe the body is an amazing machine. Therefore, if yours is causing you pain, visiting us can only help improve it.

In very basic terms, a subluxation is when one or more of the bones in a person’s spine move out of position creating pressure on or irritating the nerves in their spine. As time goes by and subluxation remains untreated, the spine and surrounding features such as discs can begin to degenerate. This degeneration becomes more difficult to reverse as time goes by as the surrounding muscles, nerves and bones begin to adjust to the new shape. Subluxation symptoms can vary depending on the person, but if you are experiencing any type of spine or nerve pain, please give us a call.

Sacroiliac Joint Pain

Have you ever felt an unexplained pinch in your lower back and/or hip that becomes irritated when you move from the sitting-to-standing position? If so, then you may be experiencing sacroiliac joint pain. The sacroiliac (SI) joints are formed by the connection of the sacrum and the right and left iliac bones. The function of this joint is to transfer weight and forces due to movement of your upper body through the pelvis, to your legs and vice versa. When this joint becomes injured and/or moved out of place, our doctors at Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation can fix the problem.

The primary role of the sacroiliac joint is to provide stability for the pelvis and to bear the upper load of the body. It acts as a shock-absorbing structure and does not have much motion, but it can cause pain once it’s moved out of its groove. While it is not clear how the pain is caused, it can develop because of too much movement or too little movement. If you feel inflammation in this area, the longer you wait to find relief, the longer it will take to correct the problem.

If you think you may benefit from chiropractic care, please give us a call.  To schedule an appointment in any of our Triad locations including our Greensboro, NC office, call us at 336-543-2231 or visit the Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation website, www.hstriad.com.

Chiropractic Adjustment Goals

A chiropractic adjustment, also known as a chiropractic manipulation, manual manipulation, or spinal manipulation, is a common therapeutic treatment for lower back pain. To complete the adjustment, one of our doctors at Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation will apply pressure to the vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally. In addition to relieving your back pain over time, people have reported that chiropractic adjustments benefit headaches, ear infections, neck pain, joint pain, and arthritis.

At Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation, we pride ourselves on taking a natural, drugless approach to helping our patients reach their health goals. Essentially, the basic principle of chiropractic itself is that the body has the amazing ability to heal itself (under proper conditions). The objective of a chiropractic adjustment is to reduce the subluxation with the goals of increasing range of motion, reducing nerve irritability and improving function.

If you think you may benefit from a chiropractic adjustment, please give us a call. To schedule an appointment in any of our Triad locations including our Greensboro, NC office,  call us at 336-543-2231 or visit the Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation website, www.hstriad.com

Cold Laser Therapy

Pain can slow you down, make everyday tasks seem difficult, and it can even lead to depression. At Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation, we work to find a solution to relieve your pain and heal your body. We utilize cold laser therapy for patients who are in pain, chronic or otherwise.

Cold laser therapy can relieve pain, heal injuries faster, reduce swelling and spasms, and increase functionality. This quick procedure involves emitting non-thermal light through the skin and into the tissue that is affected. The light reacts with elements in the cells and creates a photosynthesis-like reaction. It creates energy and events in the cells that lead to faster healing, reduced pain, and reduced inflammation. It actually triggers the regeneration of cells. The cold laser can react with all types of cells, so it is beneficial for many conditions.

Some of the conditions that can benefit from cold laser therapy include arthritis, tendonitis, neck pain, and back pain. In addition, soft tissue injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, and fibromyalgia are also able to be treated.

If you are living in pain, it is time to see if cold laser therapy can help you. To schedule an appointment in our Greensboro, NC office or to check out our other locations, call us at  (336) 543-2231 or visit the Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation website, www.hstriad.com

Tips for Proper Posture

Sit up straight! Don’t slouch! If your mother ever shouted these commands at you, they probably didn’t stick, but they should have. Posture refers to the body’s alignment and positioning with the respect to the ever-present force of gravity. Good posture not only affects your physical body, it provides a boost for your emotional and mental well-being. By positioning the body correctly while sitting and standing, there is even pressure on the spine, its muscles and ligaments, leaving you to feel more pain-free. To help you stand tall and maintain good posture, our staff at Health 1st of the Triad thought we would share the following tips with you.

  • Imagine that a string is attached to the top of your head and pulling you upwards. The idea is to keep your body in perfect alignment, maintaining the spine’s natural curvature, neck straight and shoulders parallel with the hips.

  • To stand correctly, you should always keep your shoulders back and relaxed while pulling in your abdomen and keeping your feet about hip distance apart.

  • Balance your weight evenly on both feet and try not to tilt your head forward, backwards or sideways. Finally, you should always keep your legs straight, but your feet relaxed.

If you have questions about correct posture, please give us a call. To learn about the conditions we treat and the services we provide at the office, visit www.hstriad.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Health 1st of the Triad in Greensboro, NC, call 336-543-2231.

What is a Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc can be painful and it can cause numbness, pain, and tingling in extremities. Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Center in Greensboro, NC can diagnose and treat patients with herniated discs so that they can get back to their life. Keep reading to learn about what a herniated disc is and what problems it can cause.

A spinal disc is a cushion that is between all the individual vertebrae in the spine. It helps with movement and it absorbs shock. Discs are rubbery, disc-shaped, and have a softer center. A herniated disc is when some of that softer center part bulges out through a small tear in the tougher, rubbery outer layer. The pain associated with herniated discs happens when the bulging part pushes up against a nerve.

The pain will radiate from that area and will also travel to wherever the nerve leads. This can lead to numbness, tingling, and pain in legs and arms. For example, if the sciatic nerve is pressed on, it can send pain shooting through your hip all the way down your leg. The symptoms of a herniated disc can range from nothing to severe pain.  If you are experiencing numbness or weakness to a limb, you should seek medical attention immediately to rule out any life-threatening causes.  Chiropractic treatment may include adjustments, physical therapy, and spinal decompression, among other forms of therapy. Patients usually find relieve quickly.

To learn more about herniated discs or to schedule an appointment with Health First Chiropractic and Rehabilitation in Greensboro, NC, call us at (336) 543-2231. Our other locations may be found on our website, www.hstriad.com

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder Treatment

The temporomandibular joints, called TMJ, are the joints and jaw muscles that make it possible to open and close your mouth. You have two temporomandibular joints which work together as a pair, one in front of each ear to help you eat, yawn, and speak. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a complex and poorly understood set of conditions characterized by pain in the jaw joint and surrounding tissues and limitation in jaw movements. If you have been diagnosed with TMD, our doctors at Health 1st of the Triad can correct the problem.

Although there is no documented reason that TMJ disorders occur, scientists have found that most patients with TMD also experience painful conditions in other parts of the body. These comorbid conditions include chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic headache, endometriosis, fibromyalgia, interstitial cystitis, irritable bowel syndrome, low back pain, and sleep disorders. Signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders may include pain or tenderness in your jaw, discomfort while chewing, aching facial pain, or locking of the joint, making it difficult to open and close your mouth.

If you experience any of these symptoms, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. 7 Tips For A Healthier Spring

We've put together 7 tips to enjoying a happy and healthy spring.  Check it out...

1. Revamp Your Exercise Routine

Your exercise routine has most likely probably decreased while you could lose yourself under layers of winter clothes, so now is the time to revamp it! Concentrate on your arms, legs and abs, and if you have a gym membership, schedule some time to use it! If not, make a time to go for a walk or a jog, and check out the outdoors as it changes from winter to spring...

2. Plan an Outdoor Excursion

Plan a date to go for a picnic with your mom, your best friend or your boyfriend, and find a proper picnic basket. Then start stocking up on exciting spring foods like strawberries and lemonade, and enjoying the outdoors - while getting a little Vitamin D in the process.  Getting healthier couldn't be more enjoyable!

3.  Get Ready To Get Away

Book your vacation! Whether you can take an actual vacation, or just enjoy a few days off work, go ahead and plan some events, it’s the perfect way to celebrate the start of spring. What better things to plan a trip to the beach or to a water park or even the zoo...

4. Update the Wardrobe!

Pack away your winter clothes, and dig out the spring ones! Find items you can layer for the cooler days, and pretty spring dresses for the warmer ones... and make sure you check what still fits, and consign anything that doesn’t. That way you can get some spring spending money!

5.  Watch The Diet

Spring offers great choices for healthier food intake.  Remember that it also brings about the quick fast foods as well.  Skip the hot dog at the ballpark and enjoy some grilled chicken instead!

6. Try Something New

Spring is a time of new grow - so it's a great time for new experiences as well.  Try something you've been putting off over the winter.  Take the yoga class or try the hiking club - enjoy something new this spring!

7. Yes - Spring Clean!

Now it’s time to give the house a good Spring Cleaning! Go ahead and donate things you don’t need, put away the winter clothes, clean the windows, tidy the bedrooms... set aside a day to clean the house and your car as well. Not only is it good for the house, it can be good exercise too!

"Prior to my visit to North Carolina, I suffered an injury to my shoulder that was interfering with my training. I went to see Dr. Mays at Health 1st to help eliminate some of this pain and resolve other issues I developed from grappling. It is very important for me to continue my high volume of training in order to stay prepared for upcoming competitions.

Regular visits with Dr. Mays made it possible for me to stay in the gym and continue preparing for my next event. I travel around the world, and within the U.S., competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts. The professionalism, knowledge, and kind staff are amongst the best I have ever seen. I highly recommend any athlete to see Dr. Mays, at Health 1st, on a regular basis for injury prevention and healing. Stimulate Your Muscles with Electricity

At Health 1st of the Triad, our staff provides patients with Inferential Electro-Therapy to help the body deal with spasms, sprains, and issues related to soft tissues. Inferential Electro-Therapy involves a process through which low-level electrical currents are used to stimulate muscles, forcing them to contract. It is typically used in the early stages of physical rehabilitation following an injury that has left certain muscles unused for a long period of time.

This type of electrical therapy has been advertised to increase muscle strength, to decrease body weight and body fat, and to improve muscle firmness and tone in healthy individuals. The feeling of this therapy is very gentle and most patients feel extremely comfortable during the treatment. In addition, this method of treatment stimulates the body’s natural healing method by helping it to produce natural pain killing endorphins.

If you think you may benefit from electric muscle stimulation treatment, please give us a call. To learn more about the conditions we treat and the services we provide at our office, visit www.hstriad.com for more information. Allergies and Your Health

Are you frustrated with Allergies and no one seems to understand? Maybe it's time to take a fresh approach to allergies, their causes and treatments.  Over the past week, our doctors spent time with some of the leading experts in the fields of allergies and food.

It is often stated that when an animal is "sick", we turn and ask "I wonder what that animal ate that made it sick?"  But when it comes to people, we seldom look to food and the allergies related to food that could be leading to our sickness as well.  Not only can the food we eat be part of the issue, but the way we store the food could be part of the problem.

We know that our bodies are teeming with chemical reactions every day of our lives.  We take food, break it down into tiny molecules, then turn it into things we need to function.  These chemical reactions occur millions of times per day in our body and we don't even think about them until something goes wrong.

The difficult part of this concept is that it's not only dependent on the foods we eat, but the chemicals we take as well.  This does not just mean drugs or other chemicals.  Our storage containers can leech chemicals into our foods and even the "healthy" supplements that we take can contain fillers or other chemicals that can cause havoc on our bodies.

So if you are suffering with allergies or allergy symptoms, it's time to take a second look at the issue.  Talk to one of our doctors today and find out how you can live better today!

Ultrasound Therapy

While it shares the same name, the type of ultrasound you are going to receive at Health 1st of the Triad is not in any relation to the type of ultrasound expectant mothers receive. Ultrasound therapy is the use of sound waves above the range of human hearing to treat soft tissue injuries, muscle spasms and strains, and additional joint injuries. In fact, these sound waves do an excellent job in excelling the body’s healing process in addition to decreasing scar tissue formation.

There are many different types of therapeutic ultrasound that use different intensities and frequencies of sound, but all share the basic principle of “stimulating” or even provoking tissue with sound waves. Certain ultrasounds even create a heating effect to help relax the muscles or tightness in the body. The heat combined with the overall features of the ultrasound jumpstart the healing process, reducing the length of your road to recovery.

If you think you may benefit from ultrasound therapy, please give us a call. To learn more about the conditions we treat and the services we provide at our office, visit www.hstriad.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Health 1st of the Triad in Greensboro, NC, call 336-543-2231.

Why is Acupuncture Done?

You may have heard of people turning to acupuncture to quit smoking, or to assist in their weight loss journey, but it does much more than those two things. Acupuncture can be used to treat headaches, bursitis, low back pain, asthma, Fibromyalgia, and myofascial pain to name a few more. Acupuncture is based on a theory that energy, called chi (say “chee”), flows through and around your body along pathways called meridians. To begin the acupuncture process here at Health 1st of the Triad, our doctors will give you an exam and ask questions about your pain and range of mobility.

Acupuncturists believe that illness occurs when something blocks or unbalances your chi. The technique itself is done by placing very thin needles into your skin at certain points on your body. This is done to influence the energy flow. Not everyone is a good candidate for acupuncture, which is why it is important to schedule a consultation first.

If you think you may benefit from acupuncture, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at the office, visit www.hstriad.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Health 1st of the Triad in Greensboro, NC, call 336-543-2231.

What Is Trigger Point Therapy?

A trigger point is a tight area within muscle tissue that causes pain in other parts of the body. A trigger point in the back, for example, may produce referral pain in the neck. At Health 1st of the Triad, we offer trigger point massage therapy which is specifically designed to alleviate the source of the pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release. In this type of massage for trigger point therapy, the recipient actively participates through deep breathing as well as identifying the exact location and intensity of the discomfort.

After forming, trigger points have two phases, active and latent (dormant). The active phase is the most painful and is the one which produces the unrelenting symptoms. This is the stage that motivates people to seek relief because the active trigger point hurts when pressed with a finger and causes pain around it and in other areas. Since a trigger point is an abnormal biochemical and mechanical area in contracted muscle tissue, the number and exact location on each person can vary. Since a trigger point is the contraction mechanism of the muscle locked into a shortened position, the trigger point therapy involves unlocking that contraction, leaving you pain-free.

If you think you may benefit from trigger point therapy, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at the office, visit www.hstriad.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Health 1st of the Triad in Greensboro, NC, call 336-543-2231.

Benefits of Custom Foot Orthotics

If you’re someone who is on their feet all day, aches and pains in your lower body are likely common. This is because the shock of your feet hitting the ground travels up your leg causing lower back pain and uneven hip alignment/posture. If your feet aren’t properly supported, moving can cause stress and strain on these parts. To support them, our doctors at Health 1st of the Triad can prescribe custom foot orthotics that are specially made and designed to support and comfort your feet and your feet only.

Heel pain sufferers, arch pain sufferers, and senior citizens are all types of people who may benefit from custom foot orthotics, but naturally, this depends on the individual patient. Orthotics are helpful in various ways because they help restore your ability to walk, run, and jump by reducing pain and swelling. They also increase the stability of unstable joints and provide better arch and back support. Selecting a shoe insert can be overwhelming, so why not have one that’s tailored to your needs?

If you think you may benefit from custom foot orthotics, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at the office, visit www.hstriad.com for more information. Simple Tips for Taking Care of You

Most of us don’t give ourselves the well-deserved break we need to keep our mental health stable. Whether it be putting our phones down, or planning a weekend trip, it’s important to “shut-down” every now and then. At Health 1st of the Triad, our staff takes pride in putting patients first. This is why we suggest utilizing some or all of these tips to treat you to a little rest and relaxation.

  • Indulge in a massage – set aside some time to experience the complete and total bliss of a massage. It soothes both the mind and muscles, improves sleep quality, and reduces stress.

  • Unplug – these days it seems like we’re all glued to our phones, laptops, or even both at the same time. Taking a break from social media, email, blogging, and so on can help us recharge and gives our brain the downtime it needs to work at an optimal level.

  • Get outside – Yes we are aware that it’s winter, but ditching the comfort of your home is a great way to improve mental and physical health.

Spinal Decompression Basics

Nonsurgical spinal decompression therapy involves stretching the spine, using a traction table or similar motorized device, with the goal of relieving back pain and/or leg pain. Here at Health of the 1st Triad, our spinal decompression devices use the same basic principle of spinal traction. Both traction and decompression therapy are applied with the goals of relieving pain and promoting an optimal healing environment for bulging, degenerating, or herniated disks.

When the spine is gently stretched, this takes pressure off the spinal disks, which are gel-like cushions between the bones in your spine, by creating a negative pressure in the disc. As a result, bulging or herniated disks may retract, taking pressure off nerves and other structures in your spine. This, in turn, helps promote movement of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into the disk so they can heal.

If you have back pain that you can’t seem to find relief for, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about spinal decompression, as well as other services we provide at the practice, visit www.hstriad.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Health 1st of the Triad in Greensboro, NC, call 336-543-2231.

Many people understand that their brain controls and coordinates the body.  They may not understand that the brain is part of a complex system better known as the nervous system.  The nervous system is a complex network of nerves and cells that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord to various parts of the body. You can divide the nervous system into different parts better known as the central and peripheral nervous system.  The Central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord and The Peripheral nervous system is made up of the Somatic and the Autonomic nervous systems. At the most basic level, the function of the nervous system is to send signals from one cell to other cells, or from one part of the body to other parts.  This in a nutshell is the premise behind one of the largest health care fields on the planet.  Chiropractic health care looks at the functioning of the nervous system and chiropractic is a complete system of healthcare focused on restoring, preserving, and optimizing health by natural hands-on care. A basic philosophy of chiropractic is that the body naturally seeks the proper balance among all the systems of the body, and that these systems are meant to work together.  When the systems are out of balance or there are errors in communication, then the body begins to break down and a variety of symptoms can ensue.  Although chiropractors don’t treat body symptoms, a vast majority of patients notice significant changes in their overall health as a result of chiropractic care.  Since chiropractors focus on the nervous system and the nervous system coordinates all other systems it only goes to reason that if the nervous systems is working properly – there is a better chance for the rest of the systems to be working better as well.
Throughout the Triad, Health 1st has been dedicated to helping restore the nervous system function of thousands of patients.  If you or your family are looking for a chiropractor in High Point, Greensboro, Burlington or Winston Salem, then Health 1st is for you.  Find out if your nervous system is performing at it’s optimal level – we can help!

Therapeutic Exercise for Arthritis

It’s no secret that physically active individuals are healthier, happier and live longer than those who are inactive and unfit. This is especially true for people with arthritis. Arthritis is very common and it is an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis and related conditions and here at Health of the 1st Triad, we’d like to discuss why arthritis patients may benefit from therapeutic exercise.

Common arthritis joint symptoms include swelling, pain, stiffness and decreased range of motion. Therapeutic exercise may be useful in improving aerobic capacity, strengthening muscles, improving endurance and increasing flexibility. At Health 1st, we custom design exercise programs to help each person recover faster and stronger. In addition, exercise, as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, can improve joint mobility, overall physical activity and may even help you maintain a healthy weight.

If you suffer from arthritis and think you may benefit from therapeutic exercise, please give us a call. To learn more about therapeutic exercise, as well as other services we provide at the practice, visit www.hstriad.com for more information. The 4 Foods To Eat BEFORE Bed...

I was talking to one of the nutrition coaches about eating and timing and you may have heard that eating before bed is a horrible time to eat if you are looking to maintain or lose weight. In fact, even the doctors have told you that eating "late" or after 7 pm will cause you to GAIN weight...quicker than any other time!

Well, there's some good and bad news, in that YES - there are foods that can lead to increased weight if eaten after 7 pm - but for all those late night folks out there, there is good news as well.  The good news is that not every food that you eat past 7 pm will be automatically deposited to your butt, thighs, and love handles.

So if we know certain foods are not good for us and certain food are, then the goal is knowing which foods to eat, and which to avoid not only during the day but as the hours continue through the day.  Here is a simple guideline to follow:  Avoid carbohydrates before bed in favor of slow-digesting high-quality protein.

You see, eating carbohydrate in general causes  the body to produce more insulin and we know that Insulin is a fat storage hormone.  If we increase Insulin at night we stop the production of fat burning hormone and this creates a downward spiral cause the body to lower it's metabolism rate along with decreasing production of fat-burning hormone.  This is a double trouble problem that can actually be avoided by eating slow-digesting proteins!

If you consume slow digesting proteins, you  provide your body with a steady flow of amino acids throughout the night to help give you the building block you need to recover from the traumas and stresses of the day and it helps and maintain your calorie-burning lean muscle helping you burn fat.

Here are some of my top pre-bedtime choices:

1. White Meat Animal Protein (not red meat or fish) - White meat protein sources such as chicken and turkey are great pre-bed meal choices because they digest slowly and have a very low insulin release. These sources also promote the release of another hormone, glucagon, that assists the body with breaking down stored carbs and fat within your body to be burned for energy...a double win!   On the other hand - it's important to note that red meat and fish have a significantly higher insulin response than white meat, so it's best to avoid them all together.

2. Cottage Cheese - Although dairy is a difficult choice for many people, cottage cheese is very slow digesting and coats the stomach to be assimilated by the body over many hours. Similar to the white meat protein it can stimulate glucagon release; which helps encourage fat burning.  One tip - make sure you're using plain cottage cheese, not the flavored varieties with added sugars or fruits.

3. Green Vegetables - While these aren't considered proteins, they contain essentially no calories, are high in fiber, and they're very filling. This is one quick way to feel full and eliminate cravings - helping you stick to your eating plans!

4. A Slow-digesting, Low-carb Protein Shake - There are a number of slow-digesting protein shakes available to you.  For many people it is a great pre-bedtime routine to have a shake to end the day.  This is easy for many people and  offers a variety of choices to make a healthy but tastey night-time snake.  Although you have multiple choices - we need to give a "thumbs up" to our friends at BioTrust.  They have a protein shake that works very well for this tip.

If you have questions on what proteins may be right for you - then talk to your Health 1st Doctors - and they can find a program that is right for you.

Whiplash Causes and Treatment

Being in a car accident is a very difficult situation on a number of levels. You are worried about your car, worried about taking time off work, but the truth of the matter is, you are least likely to worry about yourself. Neck strain is often just called whiplash and although it’s usually associated with car accidents, any impact or blow that causes your head to jerk forward or backward can cause tendon and muscle tears in your neck. A car accident is a major event, so please contact our doctors at Health of the 1st Triad before any trauma becomes significant.

Sometimes, the pain of whiplash is immediate. In other cases, it can take several hours or a day before your neck begins to hurt. The blow that causes neck strains can sometimes cause a concussion, too. This is why it’s important to seek medical care after a serious accident. Treatment of whiplash depends on the wide variety of symptoms present. Some symptoms include neck pain and stiffness, headache, shoulder pain, dizziness, ringing in the ears, and/or back pain.

If you’ve recently been injured in a car accident, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about whiplash as well as other services we provide at the practice, visit www.hstriad.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Health 1st of the Triad in Greensboro, NC, call 336-543-2231.

Do You Have Poor Posture?

There are studies showing the importance of posture and overall health.  At Health 1st we've found that if we can help people improve their posture - they have better overall health.

So lets address three things you need to do to check your posture.

1. Look in the mirror!

If you just stand and look in the mirror - many postures issues can be exposed.  You can look at your shoulders, your eyes and your hips - if their not level there may be an issue.  If you see posture issues in the mirror you need to make sure they aren't affecting your health.

2. Ask your friends/co-workers/family...

Yes - mom was right!  If you're having people tell you to "sit up straight" then you may have posture issues.  Don't let your posture dictate your health - make sure you have your posture issues taken care of.

3.  Lay down.

Yes - lay on the floor.  If you lay on the floor and you don't feel "balanced" you may have posture issues.  As soon as some people lay on the floor - they notice that their body is not level with the floor.  If one hip lays on the floor and the other hip is in the air - your posture is out of balance.

If you notice any of these posture tests are about you - then YOU NEED IT EVALUATED!

Don't let your posture dictate your life - make sure it's your health FRIEND - not your health destroyer.
